The students of the Joint Post-Graduate Studies Program “Conference Interpreting and Translation” of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki had the opportunity to collaborate with Terminology Coordination Unit of the European Parliament (TermCoord) and the students of ISIT, Master Program on “Intercultural Management and Communication” on a terminology project. The domain of this project was Natural Language Processing, and the aim was to research, collect and finally create a multilingual resource (English, French, Greek) on the FAIRTerm platform. The project was supervised by professors Elpida Loupaki and Pascale Ebaz and coordinated by TermCoord. NLP can be briefly defined as the interdisciplinary field of computer science and linguistics. It is the ability for computers to understand human language. It is directly linked to translation since one of its applications is Machine Translation and also includes Personal Voice Assistant, Chatbots, Error detection, Fake news Identification. The students started by familiarizing themselves with the topic. They collected textual resources, such as papers and scientific articles about NLP and created a corpus on Sketch Engine and AntConc. The second step was to extract the terms using, for example, the tool TermoStat, and comprise a list of terms with explanatory context, in English, Greek and French. After the creation of the main list, the terms were divided into four categories: (a) processes that are carried out with the use of NLP, (b) models/theories that concern theoretical approaches and NLP models, (c) properties that refer to the characteristics of a language and (d) tools where NLP is implemented. The students of both the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the ISIT formed four different groups and each group was assigned a category. The students worked collaboratively, decided on the final terms and, at the end, they inserted them on the FAIRterm platform, an innovative tool designed by the University of Padova. For the validation of terms both groups consulted field experts. For the Greek language it was Dr Stella Markantonatou, Research Director at the Institute for Language and Speech Processing/ATHENA RC and for the French language it was Pascal Tartarin, Data Scientist in Deep Learning and NLP and Jean-Baptiste Tanguy, doctoral student in NLP at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University. All experts have kindly examined the glossaries of the separate categories and answered the students’ questions. As affirmed by the students of both universities, it was a very interesting and inspiring experience which resulted in a new useful resource for the field of NLP.
