This is day one of Together at Home — the virtual version of the European Language Industry Association’s (ELIA) annual conference. The event offers two tracks; “best practices for translators and LSP’s [language services providers]” and “looking ahead — trends and tools.” Today’s sessions include a keynote by Sarah Bawa Mason from the University of Portsmouth on the localization industry’s need to better communicate its value proposition to clients. Other sessions review digital platform translation, machine translation (MT) demand, Trados software use and how to sell via LinkedIn. Tomorrow, conference speakers will take a look at the freelancer LSP relationship, LSP liability in legal translations, ethics in translator and interpreter training, remote interpreting standards, localization feedback and audiovisual translation tech, as well as how to use memoQ and Juremy — a European Union legal terminology search tool. February 26th is the final conference day with talks on translation management, recruiting new employees, freelance translator engagement, the role of freelancers in the age of MT, increased automation, the future of website localization and translator directory site ProZ. There’s also a morning yoga class taught by Nimdzi Insights localization advisor Marek Jakúbek just for fun. [Note Nimdzi owns MultiLingual.] Other presenters include representatives from BDU, Dublin City University, RWS Moravia, translated [sic], Easyling and the Institute of Translation and Interpreting. There is a close — but not identical — resemblance between the lists of speakers and sponsors, which includes Easyling, SDL, RWS Moravia, MemoQ, and others. This week will also see the return of ELIA’s popular Together Fair, a companion networking event where freelance translators and LSP’s can connect. RWS Moravia, Acolad, Chef du Monde, Rosario Traducciones, 2M Language Services, and others are expected to attend.
