Digital services are rapidly evolving and shaping the way in which many citizens of the EU live and work. Such services include, for example, social networks, internet infrastructure services, marketplaces, and content-sharing platforms. As part of the European Digital Strategy, Shaping Europe’s Digital Future, the European Commission is now upgrading the rules governing digital services in the EU. In particular, two legislative initiatives will be put in place: the Digital Services Act (DSA) and the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The main goals of both initiatives will be to create a safer space where the rights of all users of digital services are protected, and where innovation, growth, and competitiveness are fostered. With the Digital Services Act, citizens will be placed at the centre, in line with common values of shared responsibility, transparency, efficiency, and clear accountability. This week’s IATE Term of the Week is Digital Markets Act. Following the definition available in IATE, it refers to a “planned act that will upgrade EU liability and safety rules for digital platforms, services and products, and complete the Digital Single Market”. Although the Digital Market Act was officially published on December 15th 2020, the term was already circulating in 2019, and it has now official equivalents in 23 community languages.
